This year’s Music x Media event once again presented Tampere Music Award, which honors an outstanding international music industry figure.  The award, which has been given since 2010, is presented by the City of Tampere at the Music x Media Industry Awards Gala.

This year’s Tampere Music Award goes to Thomas Johansson from Sweden, one of the Nordic music industry’s most prominent figures and pioneers. Johansson, who has worked as a concert promoter, manager and agent, among other things, began his career in the 1960s as a teenager. In 1969 Johansson founded EMA Telstar, a music agency, and soon he became one of Scandinavia’s leading concert promoters.  In 1999, EMA Telstar was sold to Clear Channel in the US and in 2008 the company was renamed Live Nation Sweden.

Over the years, Johansson has worked closely with ABBA, Roxette, Paul McCartney and numerous other music superstars. He has been involved in several ABBA concert tours and in the 1974 Eurovision in Brighton, where the band won the song contest. Throughout his long career, Johansson has ensured that big names would come to the north to perform. Indeed, it is mainly thanks to Johansson that the Nordic countries have become a permanent fixture on major world tours for singers and bands.

The honor was presented at the Industry Awards Gala on Friday 4th October 2023.
