Jenni Ahtiainen, the founder of Deafmetal and gTIE, has brought both of her brands into the international spotlight. Driven by a strong vision, creativity, and a boundary-pushing attitude, her goal is always to effect change. Through Deafmetal, Jenni also highlights challenges faced in the music industry: the permanent impact of sound levels on both workers’ and audiences’ hearing is an issue that demands our attention. At Music x Media, Jenni will discuss how Deafmetal is building a pioneering international business through brand and live business collaboration, with a broader goal of inspiring us all to act towards a more responsible listening culture.

”My name is Jenni Ahtiainen, and I’ve been designing accessories under my brand gTIE for almost 20 years. During my design career, I’ve had the opportunity to create some iconic pieces for musicians like Ville Valo, Amorphis, Kovacs, Bono, Snoop Dogg and Marilyn Manson.

Deafmetal, however, was born from a very personal problem; reinventing the lifeless medical devices behind my ears into something that looked like me. Something that felt like me. Within the first year, Deafmetal became an award-winning innovation that spread across the globe like a wildfire. With Deafmetal jewelry accessories, people of all styles and cultures could not only personalize, but also securely attach their hearing devices with the jewelry’s unique safety features, creating a bridge between fashion design and practical problem-solving.

After years in the fashion industry, I finally feel that my designs are having a profound impact, empowering self-expression in a way that hadn’t existed, and opening up conversations around a rapidly growing hearing loss epidemic through the power of creativity and invention.”

Building bridges. Solving problems.
